Description

Figure 237 from Chapter 7 (Mitochondria) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. Mitochondria in cells of brown adipose tissue (shown here in interscapular brown fat of the bat) are dense, and have an extensive internal membrane. Abundant mitochondria support high energy requirements, such as during arousal from hibernation, when energy from oxidation of fat generates heat to help restore the body temperature to normal.
