Description

Opercularia is named for a ciliated flap (operculum) that is adoral to the opening to the oral region. However, this operculum is pulled back into the body when the myonemes are fully contracted as in this figure. The cilia bordering the operculum arise from the perioral kinetids. TEM taken on 6/13/69 by R. Allen with Philips 300 operating at 60kV. Neg. 4,270X. The raw negative was scanned with an Epson Perfection V750 Pro and this high resolution image is best used for quantitative analysis. Technical Details

Standard glutaraldehyde fixation followed by osmium tetroxide, dehydrated in alcohol and embedded in an epoxy resin. Microtome sections prepared at approximately 75nm thickness. Additional information available at (http://www5.pbrc.hawaii.edu/allen/).
